Project Description
To improve the communication between design and production staff,
and to improve the efficiency and extent of use of the company's CNC
equipment I developed a process that allows organ designers to use a
parameter driven design approach to detail automatically thousands of
cut features. These features are tagged in such a way that they can
be quickly passed to CNC equipment for cutting, and to production personal
to work with.
Design Solution
The system centers on an excel spreadsheet that I created,
which solves the physical placement of organ pipes and the mechanisms
that drives them. Under the control of the designer, who describes
the parameters which impact the positioning of a set of pipes, the
spreadsheet writes code that draws geometry in AutoCAD that details
the layout of pipes and mechanism.
Once in AutoCAD, the geometry can be interpreted by software that
controls CNC machinery. This allows for quick passage from design
to CNC cutting. The drawn geometry is also available for inclusion
in organ plans and three dimensional CAD models of the organ.
In addition to creating this process I was responsible for overseeing
CNC operations and training other designers in the use of the system
and in 2D & 3D AutoCAD.
